A Lil Bit of Sporting Excitement...

Well, now. I’ve seen a few hockey fights in my time but this one takes the proverbial gâteau
I’ve never seen an official hit like that before, and I’ve rarely seen players deliberately ignore an official to the extent the Remparts goalie does in his eventual and successful attempt to beat the snot out of the opposing goalie. But this ain’t the NHL…it’s Junior Hockey. Speaking of which…that’s the Quebec Remparts in red and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in white; the game was played this past Saturday (March 22). Both teams play in one of Canada’s Junior Leagues. Hockey legend Guy LaFleur played for the Remparts, and the equally-legendary Guy Carbonneau played for Chicoutimi once upon a time. Oh. One other thing. You may have heard of Patrick Roy. He coaches the Remparts.
And some people say hockey is boring. Some people wouldn’t know their nether regions from their elbow, too. YM (most certainly) MV, Gentle Reader.
Speaking of hockey… I’ve been remiss of late by not mentioning the Beloved Red Wings have posted their eighth consecutive 100-point season and most probably will win their fourth President’s Trophy in the 00’s.

  1. Holy Moley! I was a goalie, so I know we're all slightly off our nut to begin with, but that guy is an animal! When he finished pounding the pee out of his opposite number, he then whaled another guy at center ice.

I was especially taken with the fact that, while the ref tried to stop him from crossing center ice a few times, once he got to the other end, and was kicking the snot out of the other goalie, he just skated right past as though he was Sergeant Schultz (I Zee Nuzzin!)

  2. Now, Buck, are you saying I don't know my nether regions from my elbow?

I've always believed that people only watch hockey for the fights. The rest of the game is dull as powder.

I keep waiting for a hockey game to break out in the middle of one of my karate tournaments.

Cool! Hockey fans are few and far between in these parts, Jim, with the exception of SN1, who always calls to let me know/remind me there's a Red Wings game on the telly. And we exchange calls all throughout the game, sort of "watching it together, yet separately."

I should have known you were a hockey guy, what with living in an "Original Six" city.

Becky sez: Now, Buck, are you saying I don't know my nether regions from my elbow?

If the shoe fits, Becky... ;-)

Wrong. Oh, so wrong...on SO many levels I just don't know WHERE to begin (so I won't). And your karate tournaments are held on ice? Jeez... I guess I don't know MY nether regions from my elbow, either... when it comes to karate. ;-)

  4. I have a friend who played hockey in high school. There were some brutal fights. I think she still plays hockey. Her brother does too.( They are Avalanche fans. She has a "Red Wings suck" tee shirt. I am not partial to any particular team. Just for the record. I would not want some Wings fan to egg my car) ;) I have been to TONS of hockey games. From pee-wee to college. No pro games though.

  5. Wowzers! You would have thought the other goalie would have been more prepared, but "beat the pee" out of him he did! If they had not been on ice and in all that padding, someone could have gotten hurt! I do like hockey, but it is just so darn fast, it takes me a while to follow the puck. Of course, I will watch most any sport - cricket, darts, billards, rugby, etc.

  8. I stopped watching hockey when I was in college... I went to two universities, both of which had hockey as the main sport. The players were arrogant jerks...
It is a good game, and I do catch one now and then. I've even been to the hockey hall of fame... the US one.

Like suldog, I'm amazed at how the ref ignored the goalie whaling on the other goalie once he started. Sergeant Schultz exactly.

  9. Wrong. Oh, so wrong...on SO many levels I just don't know WHERE to begin (so I won't).

NOT wrong, NOT wrong on any level...

Why yes, sometimes karate tournaments are held on ice. They're called HOCKEY GAMES!!!! Perhaps hockey players should just take up karate. That way they can skip the boring bits and get straight to the fights.

  10. They get into some great bar fights up there in Kweebeck, too. Must be something in the water (that they use to brew beer).

  11. I have thought of all the adjectives I could to describe this event but one fits the whole gang: "Stupid."

  12. My mom once told me that she would never date a bullrider because they were not so smart (rides a 1000 lb killer, is missing teeth, has had most of his bones broken, etc). It was the ropers who wore startched shirts, and were driving nice trucks, pulling a nice horse trailer, with an expensive horse. They were the smart cowboys. Maybe it is the same with hockey - possibly they are not the sharpest knives in the drawer, but like bullriders, they are a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

  13. Buck been watching your "Dead Wings" on Fox Michigan, and they need to turn it up a notch if they are going to make a strong playoff run....Meanwhile my Philly Flyers seem to be peaking, but being young and untested, I foresee a first round out, that is if they hold on and make the cup run.

  14. Least I forget, body baby Roy and his classless old man have been suspended.

The punk got 7 games and old man Patrick got 5.

  15. Will have to show this to my 5-year old nephew/budding hockey fan - he likes the fights best.

  16. I feel I'm inclined to agree with old man lincolns adjective on this one although 'stupid' has been known to be quite entertaining more than we realize I'm sure!
What's this about a Birthday Buck??

  17. Ashley sez: They are Avalanche fans. She has a "Red Wings suck" tee shirt. ... I have been to TONS of hockey games. From pee-wee to college. No pro games though.

I think every Avs fan has one of those shirts. They're a legacy from the good ol' days when the Wings met the Avs in some pretty intense games during the play-offs. Avs - Wings used to be one of the premier rivalries in the league...not so much these days.

You may have been to more games than I have. I didn't see my first hockey game until 1976, when a woman I was dating casually had tickets to the International "B" Championships, which were held in Tokyo that year. The lady was incredulous when I told her I'd never been to a game, seeing as how she grew up in Minnesota, or Wisconsin, or someplace where it's colder than 'ell. But... we went, we saw, and I was HOOKED.

Lou sez: I do like hockey, but it is just so darn fast, it takes me a while to follow the puck. Of course, I will watch most any sport - cricket, darts, billards, rugby, etc.

The speed is one of the things that really sets hockey apart, IMHO. Plays develop very quickly and you have to have instantaneous reflexes as well as agility to be good at the sport. Simply weighing 300 lbs isn't enough to get you near a rink, unlike SOME other sports...

Speaking of others... you watch cricket? I spent a lot of time trying to understand the game when I was in England... and gave up.

Becky sez: NOT wrong, NOT wrong on any level...

This conversation is going nowhere, Becky. But YOU'RE on the wrong side of the argument here. It's my house. ;-)

TripleE sez: The players were arrogant jerks...

Wow, that surprises me, TripleE, given hockey players (of the NHL variety, anyway) tend to be the most polite, modest, and genuinely GOOD human beings, as a class... that class being professional athletes. Yeah, there are a few bad apples, but as I sadi, they tend to be modest to a fault. So much so I rarely watch player interviews any longer... coz they're ALL the same in their super-modest, unassuming way.

Lin sez: They get into some great bar fights up there in Kweebeck, too. Must be something in the water (that they use to brew beer).

And they DO brew some great beer up there in The Great White North. Labatts was the beer-of-choice for about ten years in my house, and I still buy the occasional sixer of Blue from time to time.

Abe sez: I have thought of all the adjectives I could to describe this event but one fits the whole gang: "Stupid."

You're obviously not a hockey fan, eh, Abe?

    Abe... meet Becky.
    Becky, this is Abe.
You two have something in common... I think you'll get on famously! ;-)

Lou sez: Maybe it is the same with hockey - possibly they are not the sharpest knives in the drawer, but like bullriders, they are a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

That could be, but most of the players today seem to be pretty sharp (no pun...), especially the stars. But they're the guys who get the most face-time with the media... I can't speak for rodeo folks at all, except to say bull riders are either REALLY crazy or are braver than I am, by a LONG shot! I've watched a few PBR events on Versus, and I'm ALWAYS amazed...

Pat sez: Buck been watching your "Dead Wings" on Fox Michigan, and they need to turn it up a notch if they are going to make a strong playoff run....Meanwhile my Philly Flyers seem to be peaking, but being young and untested, I foresee a first round out, that is if they hold on and make the cup run.

The Wings have been suffering with a LOT of injuries in the last six weeks, including captain and five-time Norris trophy winner Nick Lidstrom. It looks like the team is getting healthy... just in time for the play-offs!

I agree with you about the Flyers, too. Young team, but that's a GOOD thing! (Oh. Roy The Elder may be classless, and he most certainly was a guy I loved to hate when he played for the Avs, but he IS the best goalie of modern times. And possibly the best, ever.)

Phlegmmy sez: Will have to show this to my 5-year old nephew/budding hockey fan - he likes the fights best.

Hopefully he'll also learn to appreciate the rest of the game, too! Which he will, assuming he goes on to play... ;-)

Ashley, Dawn and Junk Diva say: (Birthday stuff)

Thank you, Ladies. I'm honored you stop by these humble digs from time to time. (Seriously... I'm not being flip.)

Dang! This comment response is long enough to qualify as a post on its own!! LOL!
